GP's FAFSA Night
Yesterday, we had a very successful FAFSA Night. Seniors were able to talk with trained professionals who helped them start and complete their FAFSA. We even gave away wonderful prizes including Sonic gift cards and even a Kindle Fire. We are so proud of our seniors. Go Gophers!

Florence Hill Career Day
Florence Hill had a fabulous Career Day 2016. We had environmental specialists, a SWAT officer, a martial arts instructor, a drone operator, a representative from the Texas Rangers, Grand Prairie city employees, community helpers and a number of other presenters. It was educational and fun for all.

Career Day at Garner
From the Mayor to a K9 unit, along with an underwater filmmaker, interior designer, a justice of the peace, and 20 other professions, GFAA's career day was a huge success.
GPFAA Basketball Fundraiser
GPFAA thanks GPISD for acknowledging and rewarding students who scored advanced on high-stakes stressful tests last year with a day or two off this year. Our students used some down time during lunch yesterday to have a quick teachers versus students basketball game fundraiser to bring in money for prom. It was great fun for everyone involved. And, of course, everyone buckled back down for instruction time afterwards.
SGP9's Texas Rangers Visitor
SGP9 students from the Center of Sports Medicine had the unique opportunity to hear Jose Vazquez, strength and conditioning coach for the Texas Rangers, talk about his experiences in the profession. Mr. Vazquez told students that what they are learning now will be the building blocks for what they will learn in college. He emphasized the importance of getting an education and noted that without his education, he would not have the dream job that he has today with the Texas Rangers.
De Zavala Career Day
The theme for De Zavala’s Career Day was “The Secret to My Success.” On Wednesday we had approximately 40 speakers from different professions visit with our students PPCD-5th grade. The students really enjoyed them.

Crosswinds students are rocking the college application process with Ms. Sanders, the counselor, this week.

Counselors Patricia Alarcon and Kimberly Williams of Jackson Middle School attend the Texas School Counselor Conference during National School Counseling Week. Counselors armed themselves with the latest techniques and best practices in school counseling, including how to help students utilize mindfulness approaches, build awareness and resilience, and how to manage their anger.

The counselor Tonya Womack Campbell and community liaison Arletheia Clemmons work together to encourage students at awesome Austin Elementary School to have good character. Students can receive behavior/character bucks to shop once a month at the store.

Awesome Austin Elementary School’s counselor helps others stay healthy in their mind, heart and body. She encourages everyone to take care of yourself and Be Fit Wear Orange.
College Applications at GP
The College and Career Center is proud to announce that we surpassed one of our goals, which is submitted college applications. Our goal was 80%, and now it is 86% of the seniors who have submitted at least one college application. We are very proud of their hard work and determination. Go Gophers!

Proclamation from the Governor
Below is a picture of the proclamation from Governor Abbott, acknowledging the great work that school counselors do. In his proclamation, Governor Abbott noted that school counselors were dedicated to nurturing well rounded students. “School counselors,” Abbott writes, “are actively committed to helping students explore their abilities, strengths and interests. [THEY] identify and utilize community resources,” while working with “teachers and other educators to help students explore their potential,” and “become productive members of society.”

GPHS administrators provided lunch for the GPHS counselors on Tuesday, February 9, in recognition of NSCW. Registration last week did not allow us to squeeze in the luncheon, but they were patient enough to allow us to have it yesterday. Huge thanks to our administrators for the awesome lunch.

We honored our amazing counselor at Moore last week with posters, gift cards, breakfast, lunch, and our 2nd grade serenaded her at our M3 Rally to My Girl by replacing the chorus with "Ms. Collins." She is the best, and we appreciate ALL the wonderful things she does for our campus.
Austin Love
Awesome Austin Elementary students and staff "Did It Up" for me, the school counselor Tonya Womack Campbell. Last week the school showered me with warm thoughts, affirmations, gifts, and more. I love my Austin family. They make me excel as a counselor and a person. I appreciate all the love and am thankful to call myself a counselor, especially at Austin.

Counselors at Ellen Ochoa STEM invited parents for breakfast at Applebee's for a "Career Planning Workshop." Each student received a poster to participate in the GPISD Poster Contest. It was an amazing turnout.
Austin Goodies with Gilliam
Awesome Austin Elementary School had another successful Goodies with Gilliam Parenting Class. Guests included Ebony Jones, AVID Coordinator for Adams Middle School; Arletheia Clemmons, Community Liason from LEAP; Sandra Mejia, Assistant Principal; Tanya Gilliam, Principal; and Tonya Womack Campbell, counselor at Austin Elementary. Parents received information on AVID, campus activities, parent involvement, and making quality time a priority for families. Some 5th grade students also attended to learn about future college opportunites with AVID.

Jackson NSCW
Counselors at Jackson used School Counseling Week to advocate for their counseling program, as well as to show their appreciation to staff for teaming up with them to support students. Counselors used the message “Problems may POP up…when they do, see your school counselor” as a bulletin board theme, provided popcorn treats to all staff, and ran daily announcement providing students with the Recipe for Success.
Way to go, Jackson Counselors!
