Great Counselors, Great Programs

Students at Daniels are “throwing kindness around like confetti” and writing kind deeds they can do on their own confetti. 

 De Zavala students from grades kindergarten to fifth enjoyed lunch with counselors Mrs. Glover and Ms. McGriff. These students were nominated by their teachers for showing the character traits of determination and perseverance. Way to go, Lions!

Counselors at De Zavala promoted their comprehensive counseling program throughout National School Counseling Week by providing small gifts of appreciation to staff. The staff in return showed us love with banners, dress-up days, gifts, and gift cards. 

Students and staff at De Zavala listened to amazing presenters during our Career Day. Counselors Nedin Glover and Evetta McGriff, along with our Counseling Advisory Committee, coordinated our "Building Our Future" day with presenters from different career paths. Nineteen presenters, including a photographer, police officer, attorney, chef, coach, nurse, GPISD employees, and others explained their careers and encouraged students to work hard.

Crosswinds Lead Counselor, Danita Peterman, and counselor intern, Sarah Waggoner, were surprised with Counselor Appreciation gifts, and made a "graduation" walk around the campus. Crosswinds students and staff are fortunate to have the BEST counselors. 

Jackson counselors provided a social emotional lesson to their students about middle school stressors and coping skills. The kids enjoyed the mindfulness exercise and the 99 coping skills that the counselors provided. Jackson Eagles have “99 coping skills and stress ain’t one.”

 Students at Travis World Language Academy started out the week by writing “Sweet Words” to their peers and staff members as they recognize the importance of just “Being Kind” and recognizing the important work and contributions from their school counselors.

 100th Day Donations - The students and staff at Powell Elementarypartnered with LifeLine Shelter for the 100th day of school.  The school counselor, Mrs. Meeks, contacted LifeLine to find out some of the needs they have, and then each grade level was challenged to collect at least 100 of the items assigned to them.  We donated:
217 rolls of toilet paper
94 paper towel rolls
114 tissue boxes
225 bars of soap
117 deodorants
108 shampoo bottles
The generosity and caring spirit of the staff, students, and families at Powell never ceases to amaze Mrs. Meeks.

Lee’s Kindness Crew was honored with a celebration for exhibiting kindness, leadership and campus assistance during Career Day. Students were given kindness bags filled with goodies. 

YWLA counselors and social worker kicked off a 28-day kindness challenge.  Students were asked to enter the challenge and perform an act of kindness every day during the month of February for a chance to enter a raffle and win a prize.  These two young ladies were the first to accept the challenge.  #BeKindGPISD

SGPHS Counseling Services finishing off a successful first week of registration with our 9th graders. Students used iPads to select their courses in Career Cruising before meeting with their counselors. 

 Counselor Shannon Regalzi at Austin ESA hosted a wonderful career day. Students asked a lot of great questions with great listening ears. Professionals within the community came out and shared their expertise.

Lee’s Kindness Crew stepped up to label snacks for our new students. We want all students to feel welcomed and part of our FamiLEE.  
The Crew also seized the moment to advocate for the campus counselors by assisting with activities for National School Counseling Week. 

This week at Powell the school counselor, Mrs. Meeks, encouraged everyone to participate in The Great Kindness Challenge.  Everyone received a Kindness Challenge Checklist and a Kindness Pledge.  Dress-up days, including “Kindness Ties Us Together” and “Kindness Makes Our Hearts Glow,” were also encouraged.  For the final day of The Great Kindness Challenge, and to celebrate the 100th day of school, staff and students were reminded that “Kindness Never Gets Old.”  Throughout the week, students were recognized in the morning announcements for performing kind acts.  We also collected donations for LifeLine Shelter with a goal of 100 items per grade level.  Mrs. Meeks is Palomino Proud of the kindness and generosity the students and staff show daily, and she appreciates everyone putting a bit more emphasis on kindness this week.

Daniels Kindness Crew introduced #BeKindGPISD to all the students. They are very excited about continuing to spread kindness.

The GPFAA counseling team submitted a mini grant application for a buddy bench.  The buddy bench will be used to eliminate loneliness and foster friendship on campus.  Thank you to the GPISD Education Foundation for your financial support of our idea. 

 Ellen Ochoa STEM Academy collected toiletry donations for those in need in Grand Prairie. The counselors and the Kindness Crew sorted out the donations. 
 

 Travis World Language Academy donated much needed items to a local nursing home. This community service project was sponsored by the Kindness and Compassion Crew.

Counselor Jacquelyn Solis at Garcia Elementary continues to emphasize to students the effect kindness has on others' social and emotional development. When students are caught being kind, they are provided with a heart or star to record their act of kindness and display it on Garcia's kindness board. Students have learned what it means to be a Bucket Filler and not a Bucket Dipper. 
 

Students at Travis World Language Academy are Career Cruising early in the morning in the computer lab which is available to all eager early arrivals hosted by school counselor Mrs. Lopez.

Be Kind GPISD

                               Travis World Language Academy started the day out right by being kind.

GPCI school counselor Mrs. Swanigan helps 8th graders complete their dual credit applications. They will take the TSI (college readiness test) this week and enroll into dual credit courses for Fall 2019.

Jackson counselors were in the classrooms last week with their 8th grade students to discuss high school and create their four-year personal graduation plans. Jackson Eagles are focused on their futures! 

Counselor Torres from Ellen Ochoa STEM Academy gave a lesson on Determination/Perseverance. A reading by Gabi Garcia called "I Can Do Hard Things" was discussed. Students identified their strengths and weaknesses and were reminded there are challenges in life, but they can overcome anything. 

Eisenhower students had an amazing time at Career Day learning from over 40 Grand Prairie community professionals.

GPISD Counseling Services News

 Dickinson Elementary's counselor, Latavia Rivers, would like to thankTruman Middle School's Student Council and sponsors for visiting with all of our 5th graders to provide guidance regarding middle school readiness.  Our students were able to gain insight on academics, extracurricular activities, making healthy choices, and much more.  Students were also given an opportunity to ask questions to help them better prepare for the transition to middle school.  What a great time!

Garner Fine Arts Academy kindergarten students participated in a goal-setting activity during their January social emotion lesson with their counselor Mrs. James.

First grade students at GFAA are practicing mindfulness by doing a hibernating bear breath with their counselor Mrs. Rubio. 
 

Members of the GPCI Kindness Crew and Community Service Club helped out during the Red Cross Blood Drive. They even reached their blood donation goal. 

Counselor Jacquelyn Solis at Garcia Elementary held Career Day last Friday. PreK-5th grade students enjoyed visiting with Prairie Paws, a geologist, dental hygienist, REALTOR®, an engineer from Lockheed Martin, a flood plain manager from the City of Grand Prairie, students from Dubiski, firefighters, their SRO Officer Pollard, a pilot from American Airlines, Assistant General Manager of Food Service Catherine Pannell, District Menu Planner Jennifer Merth, and Office Clerk Tara Clear. A light reception and gift bags with gift cards to Chick-fil-A and Starbucks were provided to their presenters for taking time to inspire students to dream big. 

Bonham’s classroom greeters welcome their classmates every morning ready to start the day. 

The Counselor at Whitt Fine Arts Academy would like to thank the wonderful speakers who shared information about their careers with our students. Students learned about a variety of careers including Veterinarian, Photojournalist, Police Officer, Code Compliance, and Criminal Court Judge as well as others.

Dickinson Elementary recognized its wonderful students of character from the second nine weeks.  Students received a prize bag from their counselor, Latavia Rivers, for their hard work and determination. We are so proud of our students. Way to go, Cowboys!
