GPISD Counseling Services Rocks!!!

 School Counselor Mrs. Swanigan from Grand Prairie Collegiate Institute would like to send shout-outs to Makayla on her acceptance letter to Baylor, Sam who just interviewed for Harvard, and good luck wishes to Benaiah who will be interviewing with Harvard University next week for their #1 ranked program in the country. These seniors are unstoppable. 

 Garcia Elementary's counselor, teachers and students collected over 400 hygiene items to donate to our Social Worker Hub for our GPISD families in need. 
 

De Zavala Counselors Nedin Glover and Evetta McGriff ate lunch on the cafeteria stage with kindergarten and 5th grade students Thursday for their monthly character recognition. These students were recognized for displaying kindness to others. 
 Counselors at De Zavala, Nedin Glover and Evetta McGriff, encouraged students throughout the month of November to think about their future careers and display their desires on their career poster.  Congratulations to these students. They were the grade-level winners for the "Careers are Everywhere" poster contest.

 Garner Fine Arts Academy hosted a Peer to Peer Career Fair yesterday. The 5th graders did an amazing job teaching our younger students about all of the possible careers out there. Dream big, kids!

Counselor Ms. Torres at Ellen Ochoa STEM Academy gave students some lessons on colleges and careers. She also had some 5th graders present to the lower grades on their careers.
 SGPHS Counseling Services was a mini grant award winner from the GPISD Education Foundation.  The name of the grant was: Meditative Sound and Light Therapy.

What amazing participation from our Travis World Language Academy5th grade students at the Peer to Peer Fair. I want to thank the 5th grade teachers for their dedication and support to their students. You’re truly an “A” Team. 

To continue promoting kindness and compassion towards others, De Zavala's Kindness Crew, sponsored by counselors Nedin Glover and Evetta McGriff, collected almost 500 food items to donate to GPISD families in need.

#Goals

 During guidance, Dickinson students were very engaged with CCSpark (career cruising).  Students in 3rd through 5th grades also used the career cruising learning site to research their dream career, and had meaningful conversations as they shared their findings with peers.


Lee Elementary school counselor, Mrs. Duran, teaching first grade students how to differentiate between having a fixed mindset and a growth mindset utilizing a squeeze toy and a rock.
 
 Wishing seniors at Grand Prairie Collegiate Institute good luck with their Lockheed Martin internship interviews. Dream big, future engineers!  We are so proud.
 

Fourth and fifth grade students hosted a Student Career Fair Wednesday morning at Barbara Bush Elementary. This research project allowed our students to become knowledgeable about college and careers early in their academic experience. Our students did an awesome job with their research and presentations. 
 


Fifth graders at Hobbs Williams used career cruising to complete research on a professional career. They were able to present their hard work and awesome projects to students in younger grades. They did a great job.

Kindness & Careers

 Ms. Todd, counselor at Lovely Lee, facilitated a social emotional lesson with first graders on focusing attention. The students had to focus their attention in order to know which dance to do.  

 Eisenhower's Kindness Crew collected, sorted, and boxed food to donate to help families of Grand Prairie ISD. Thank you to the teachers, students, and staff for giving so generously to help those in need. Congratulations to Mrs. Hassell’s class and Mrs. Perez’s class that brought over 220 items for the food drive.


Garner Fine Arts Academy’s School Counselor and Assistant Principal hosted a girl’s presentation with 5th grade girls called Genuinely Beautiful. We learned about inner beauty, how to be a good friend, creating a positive self-image and building self-respect. It was a wonderful experience and we left chanting, “Team Girl!”

School for the Highly Gifted peer-to-peer Career Fair. Upholding the philosophy that it is never too early to value education, and values, and to begin planning for your career, SHG 5th grade students conducted a Career Fair for their elementary peers. These students utilized the Career Cruising Program to explore and research careers of interest and showcased their findings. Our younger scholars gained a wealth of knowledge and had the opportunity to learn about many interesting careers.  

The counselors, Mrs. Burton-Johnson and Mrs. Soliz, and Higher Education Advisor Ms. Martin, provided Career Cruising lessons to 8th grade students at the Digital Arts & Technology Academy. The students were able to explore various careers, colleges, and information on endorsements for high school. 

 Florence Hill Counselor Megan Hay and the Kindness Crew put together “thankful leaves” with York peppermints to show our appreciation for our staff’s com’MINT’ment to our students.

Counselors at De Zavala, Nedin Glover and Evetta McGriff, conducted lessons on career cruising and discussed peer-to-peer career fair with 4th and 5th grade students. Students researched their future careers and presented to 2nd and 3rd grade. Some students incorporated technology and created presentations on their iPads. Way to go, Lions! Students at De Zavala are college bound.

Career Bound

 The winners of Austin ESA's Career Awareness poster contest. The counselor, Shannon Regalzi, exposed a variety of careers during GenTX Week and students chose a career and created artwork to display their future career.


Fifth grade students at Powell did a fantastic job sharing about their chosen career in a “wax museum” before the break. Students in kindergarten through 4th grade went through the museum and learned interesting facts about several different careers. The school counselor would like to thank the Powell 5th grade team for their help in making this such a huge success.

Eisenhower Elementary had a great GenTX Week. The students and teachers had an opportunity to wear college gear, create college posters or pennants, dress up, and hear career presentations. 

Giving Back


Bonham school counselor and staff had another successful food drive. Donations go back to our GPISD families! 

With the help of Ms. Heckert's grant-writing skills, Gerardo Hernandez,GPFAA counselor, was awarded a mini grant. GPFAA Counseling Department will use this to buy a Buddy Bench to promote inclusion and kindness. Great work, Mr. Hernandez!


The 5th graders at Rayburn STEAM Academy researched a chosen career and created posters to present to all the other grade levels. They did a phenomenal job!

 The Social Work Hub would like to send an enormous thank you toAdamsAustinCrosswindsDickinsonEisenhowerFannin,GarnerGrand Prairie Fine Arts Academy,  Grand Prairie High SchoolMoseleySouth Grand Prairie High SchoolYoung Women's Leadership Academy and all of the GPISD counselors and social workers for working together to provide Thanksgiving dinners to almost 200 GPISD families in need! 

 Moseley's Kindness Crew and Student Council are hard at work sorting donations received for our hygiene drive.  Thank you, Moseley parents and students, for another successful donation drive.  You are the best!

 Janeth Ramirez, social worker at DATA@John Adams MS,taught students about suicide prevention.

 Moseley's fourth and fifth graders participated in this year's peer-to-peer career fair.  The students did an outstanding job presenting their prospective careers to students in kinder through third grade

Mrs. Burton-Johnson and Mrs. Soliz, counselors at DATA@Adams MS, partnered with Omega Psi Phi and Delta Sigma Theta on a turkey give-away for Thanksgiving.

Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week



Winning for Kids

 GPISD was well represented at the 2018 Lone Star State School Counselors Conference in Frisco. Congratulations to Lee Elementary,Jackson Middle School and South Grand Prairie High Schoolcounseling programs for each bringing home the Bronze Award. Thank you for all that you do for the students of Grand Prairie ISD. 

 Garner Fine Arts Academy students participated in the GenTX Week daily theme by wearing camouflage to show support for our military troops.
 
 Austin students and staff are showing how they are ready for any college and career. Hats off to colleges and careers.
 Moseley students and staff kicked off GenTX Week by showing off their college gear.

Lone Star State School Counselor Association presented three Grand Prairie schools with the esteemed 2018 LSSSCA Bronze Award.  At the yearly conference LSSSCA conveyed these honors to:
- South Grand Prairie High School
- Jackson Middle School 
- Lee Elementary School
These school counselors worked hard to achieve this level and will be working towards their Silver Award next year.
 SGPHS counselors received the Lone Star State School Counselor Association Bronze Award at this year’s conference. We are thankful for the support of our Director Dana Jackson, Principal Donna Grant, and Associate Principal Laigha Boyle. We love serving our Warrior family.
 During GenTX Week K-5 students at De Zavala commit themselves to going to college. Counselors Mrs. Glover and Ms. McGriff created banners that read "The Road to College Starts Now" for all grade levels to sign. Students have heard the counselors talk about going to college and future careers during their November lessons. De Zavala Lions are College Bound! 
Teachers and students at Hobbs Williams celebrate GenTX Week with the theme: Success is Paired with Perseverance (twin day). We even had some triplets in the mix.

 Garner Fine Arts Academy kicked off GenTX Week with a college spirit day. 
 Crosswinds' Green & Clean Committee participated in Adopt-a-Street clean-up on Friday, November 2.

Ms. Salazar's class at Garcia Elementary is celebrating GenTX College and Career Week by wearing green for UNT.  Everyone in class got a UNT pencil as well. 

Jackson counselors attended and presented at the Lone Star State School Counselors Conference. We love learning more about our profession and having fun while doing it. #GPISDCounselorsRock #TogetherWeAreStronger #lovewhatwedo #buildingbetterhumans 

Counselors at De Zavala, Mrs. Glover and Ms. McGriff, continue to encourage students to Stand 4 Kind. Teachers and other staff members nominate students who have done random acts of kindness. Counselors deliver incentives to students caught doing good. 
 Students in grades 5-8 enjoyed the message and concert from Stand4Kind to support bully prevention at TWLA.
 GPISD counselors are excited to come together at the School Counselor Annual Conference as they learn from each other and share new ideas to enhance their counseling program.

Jackson counselors Ali, Hill, and Moffitt had standing room only in their breakout session about coping skills. A job well done to this team for their awesome presentation at the Lone Star State School Counselor Association conference in Frisco.
